A little oddity (8 inches tall) I found on the shore of Lake Superior in late November 2006 as a storm was rolling in.
The phenomena is caused by the waves smashing on the rocks during a very cold day. Although it is fresh water in Lake Superior, the size and swell of the open lake prevents it from entirely freezing over during most winters. The original, A Flower for Winter, was taken five days later when I returned to this place on a sunrise morning. I wrote for that posting the thought I had most prominently when I finding it on this stormy day: 'When autumn won its seasonal battle with the onset of its cold November winds, it took prisoners... and like Medusa, adorned its halls with them... these guilded statues, in turn, became spoils for the next conqueror, winter.' ~~~~ If you'd like, please have a gander at my mini-gallery devoted to Winter on Lake Superior. thanks so much for your interest! . |
