A Moment With My Maker

Some of my friends have been aware of my spiritual struggle lately.. so I won't delve too deep into anything heavy... or 'waffle' as Bernie puts it.. but I do have to tell the story:

On January 2nd I was driving my 4-year-old daughter, Lauren, home to her mother in Sioux Lookout (Ontario, Canada) from Thunder Bay (400km) .. She had spent 2 weeks with me at my house.. 2 of my best weeks in years btw ...

It was sad event for me.. but she sang songs from her car-seat behind me, happy because she missed her mom and was going home.. I stayed cheerful for her benefit though and sang along with her. We were 150 km out from town when suddenly the sun broke through the clouds for the first time, and we entered what can only be described as driving through an infrared photo. The trees everywhere were coated in frost with the morning sun sparkling off them.. it honestly was incredible..

I wanted to stop and capture the phenomena with my camera (well who wouldn't?) but there wasn't a decent vantage point for miles ..nothing photo worthy y'know? Before long we passed through a small old highway town called Upsula .. the only building which has ever captured my attention in Upsula is this little old country church. The fresh snow lay all around it and the trees sparkled with their frosty coating. Lauren and I got out of the car and stood there on the quiet side-road breathing the crisp air.. sun-snow was falling slowly through the air, thousands of sparkling flakes falling from a blue sky.. fantastic spectacle caused by freezing condensation.

Shadows cast across the fresh snow reached out towards us and all I heard was Lauren gasp "Oh Daaaa-dy!.. thats pretty!" .. and suddenly it hit me..acutely.. a message was being sent here... beauty ..His beauty was on display for us. Just us.. we were the only ones around to witness the moment. Together. My daughter and I.

We stood there hand in hand for a long time before I took the picture and gave her a hug.

Its moments like that we live for.. we remember them clearly forever without photographs. Awareness of when these special moments occur is the key... they are fleeting..

... they are moments with our Maker.
