Industrial Nightmare - part 7

'The Path of Iron'

Upon hearing through the cast iron door the muffled din of a momentous struggle ... screams of agony from many injured in what must have been an encounter turned to horrible battle... Skinner makes his way blindly through a narrow passageway. It winds and turns through the dark until all is silent and he only hears his own struggled breath. There is light around the next turn but still no sound. The tunnel ends in a well lit large and cavernous area full of cranes and crates. The metal walls and high ceiling amplify the sounds he makes and Skinner grows nervous. Squinting in the brighter light, he notices a single railway line which runs through this room and disappears on both ends into vast dark tunnels. Suddenly it dawns on him: 'find the path of iron'. The cardinal had been quite urgent in its demands This must be the path it spoke of!

As Skinner approaches the rail he stays in the relative shelter behind a loading crane. He leans over the track below and peers down the tunnel, becoming aware of a low rushing sound ... that of a train off in the distance! He sees the light casting eerie shadows around a far-off bend in the tunnel and decides to take cover behind the crane. The sound grows to a deafening pitch and he can hear the squealing of metallic brakes. Chancing a glance Skinner is surprised to see that it is not a train at all which has arrived... but a small odd looking rail car slightly bigger than a pickup truck. As it comes to a noisy halt all becomes quiet again... no sign of any occupants or driver. After a minute of absolute quiet the engine starts up with a hydraulic whine. A steam whistle blows from above the crane and the car starts to move slowly along the rail again.

Realizing it is now or never, Skinner makes his break from his hiding spot and leaps from the platform onto the machine. The car picks up speed and races on into the tunnel. Not once does he doubt his quick decision... he'd come too far using his instincts for that. He also feels some strange sense of being watched by Gaia herself... and that offers him some comfort.

The rail car picks up speed and Skinner is swept into the dark tunnel.
