I crawled under the pier, set up the bracketing feature on my camera and took 6 shots (on a tripod of course) at +1/3EV as this ship came into the port of Thunder Bay chased by a dark storm on the horizon ..then used a freeware copy of Photomatix Basic to merge the best two exposures to get an HDR photo (I'm still in the process of developing some skills in this technique and do not pretend to be an authority by any means)..

The lighting was quite dynamic to begin with that cold morning.. short sunlight breaks illuminated the pier timbers while shooting a dark horizon making this shot possible. I suppose it could be considered good timing in more ways than one.. waiting for the ship to slowly enter the window of opportunity was an exercise in patience ..to have the sun break out for that same time window was a complete bonus! :)

The title has dual meaning of course.. the symmetry?.. well that turned out to be my favorite part of the photo.. and why I'm entering this in the Symmetrical Photography Contest
