Hey y'all!
I just want to speak my piece on copyrights, watermarks, and art 'rips'
A dear friend of mine mentioned to me that because I enable the deviant-mobile feature, I am allowing people to put my art elsewhere on the net. I've had problems in the past with 'rips' .. probably around 10 times with my photos and as many with my skins. I must admit that they used to infuriate me.. but I've come to an understanding that if someone else takes credit for my work elsewhere on the internet, then I'll at least be happy to see it displayed for others to enjoy.
After all there is no way that I am aware of that someone could profit financially by displaying my 600-pixel wide images ..and in the world-wide scheme of things, if they get a little credit where it isn't due, it won't hurt me. In one case a young Japanese girl was posting them on Flikr and received many 'ooo's' and 'ahhh's' over them from several people .. but it didn't bother me in the least .. what if someone recognized it as my work?.. She faced shame from peers by ripping the work .. let HER sleep poorly worrying about it.. I'm not going to.
I recently used my random deviation link and found a photo which had the most hideous dA-symbol-watermark stretched right across the whole thing.. and very bright so as to completely obscure the details of the photo .. not to mention the composition flow. It occured to me that alot of artists take themselves entirely too seriously and are missing the point of art-enjoyment.. that is ..the pleasure the viewer recieves.. not the pleasure the artist derives from having it viewed. I think that the artist need not be so concerned with the ugly watermark (which to me just screams: LOOK AT ME... I AM SO GREAT THAT THE WHOLE WORLD WANTS TO STEAL MY ART!) and worry more about the presentability of the art.. the
viewers pleasure.
..which brings me to one more point .. the photo that was watermarked was relatively well executed and composed, but had some outrageously colored gradient vignetting which made it very... well lets just say I thought she had ruined her photo... and I told her so .. not harshly but constructively .. I mentioned the colors and the watermark. She wasn't rude but a bit indignant telling me to 'deal with it'.
my point is this.. and I speak of the dA community in general.. We are not helping each other by simply being polite all the time or by saying WOW , COOL, or AMAZING... and I am equally guilty sometimes.. We need to start giving constructive critisism and tell the artist what we DON'T like about the piece ..
constructively ... and on the flipside we need to, as artists, start accepting this valuable input from the viewer in order to get a general feel of how we are improving..
Tell me constructively what you DON'T like about my photo and I will cherish that and respect you for doing so.. regardless of whether or not I agree.
Be good to yourselves!

Daddy's little girl by *
BubleThe first painting ever done of my daughter.
It touches me like no other piece I've ever laid eyes on, and pretty much makes my heart swell. I wish you all could find such a piece of art if you haven't..whether it's someone elses work or your own, so that you may appreciate the true power it has when you look at it.

It seems to me that the net is the public domain - that's both its joy and its drawback: if you don't want your work to go beyond your own control, don't put it online. Simple as that, really.

And of the watermark.. no one would like to rip my work so why bother.
