R.I.P.

J O U R N A L

I just want to take a moment here and talk about the theft of art.  Yesterday I was informed of yet another rip of my photos.. there seems to be a plague of this stuff going on out there on the big bad internet.  Unfortunately there is not a whole lot one can do about these things.. even if legal pursuits are successful, they are an expensive endeavor and often not worth the hardship..

My good friend Bernie (`foureyes) has recently encountered a huge theft of his art when one of his photos was actually used for the cover of a hard-cover book by a major publishing house : [link] .. best of luck with your fight Bernie!

I have been 'ripped' many times in the past, both as a photographer and before that as an application skinner.  Although I'm quite certain nobody has profitted largely from my art, it is still offensive.. one tends to feel victimized ..not pleasant at all.

I am disgusted by this latest mass-rip : [link] .. I may have to start watermarking all my images.

If you haven't heard about this yet, a fairly extensive list of offended artists from dA is available here: [link] ... apparently many complaints were directed toward the offending host-site and all the rips were taken down.

My sincerest thanks go out to the people who took action here ... and in particular I'd like to thank `WaitingForTheWorms , !Purification , and ~environaut for alerting me to the situation in the first place.

Be well my friends.

Love y'all.

Skinner

MY URBAN EXPLORATION PHOTOGRAPHY

~CellarDweller This new foray into a genre of photography completely different from my nature stuff has.. artistically speaking.. been an absolute breath of fresh air for me.  It's become, in fact, far more challenging and rewarding then I ever would have guessed.  I started with rural explorations such as old barns and abandoned farmhouse interiors and branched out into trespassing dangerous old industrial derelict buildings and shooting seedy alleyways at night in the worst parts of town...

a while ago on a different account someone ripped a poem that was very special to me and then somehow convinced the moderators or whatever the hel they are that it was their poem so it got deleted from my account cause i refused to get rid of it..i didn't even have a hard copy of that one so i lost it for good.

Sorry to hear about what happened to you. I honestly don't understand why people do such things..maybe its out of envy or jealousy.

I know exactly what you mean. My photos have been ripped several times too and there was a time when I had a large watermark text in the middle of all my photos. I removed it however, cause I got lots of comments about it... naturally people didn't like those distracting watermarks and I didn't like them either.
Now I just try to keep my photos small enough to keep the printing/pressing quality down.
I guess there's not much we can do about these seldom single cases especially if those rippers are not even trying to benefit financially, just trying to get all the credit. And as you said, at least in my cases, it would have been futile to take any legal actions against the rippers.
It's just sad things like these happen and I wish luck to Bernie with his fight.

It sucks that your stuff is getting ripped man. That totally blows.

Makes me wonder if any of my stuff is going the same way :(

Sorry to hear about your getting ripped. Watermarking is the way to go.

It's a very, very sad thing seeing art ripped like that. Glad I could help organize and alert people to it. Thankfully we got the gallery taken down...especially since the individual ripped from well over 500 deviants here. We must be vigilant!

:salute: Even though I didn't get hit, I got so pissed off when I saw work from so many artists I love and respect (including yours) get ripped that I had to do something about it. :) This is a great community, and I felt it my duty to help protect it. :)
