Why are you here at dA?

Journal Entry: Tue Apr 25, 2017, 7:40 PM

I still get inspired every day by this great site.  It is the perfect blend of fun social interaction and the promotion of the artistic side of our personalities.  There is a definite sense of wanting to better ourselves as artists by admiring and being inspired by the creativity of our peers.  We teach, learn from, and inspire one another by stretching our artistic wings and flying together.

I just finished reading a journal written by a very talented photographer who inspired me years ago with his outrageously amazing photos.  The journal was entitled 'Fuck dA'.  He wrote it 8 years ago and then abandoned his account here.  In this journal he rants about 'the little guy' getting passed by while those who have no talent but thousands of watchers dominate the front pages.

Well I think he was here for all the wrong reasons.

He was missing the inspiration part.  How others work can inspire and make you better in your own craft. He was only in it to become popular and have others admire him.  He believed that other forms of art here at dA had less merit than photography and mature artists were the only artists who deserved to be here.

I couldn't disagree more.

All artists deserve to be here, learning and maturing and striving to improve. dA is wonderful that way. I hope you all will pause and ask yourselves why you like this site.  I see so many talented yet humble and selfless artists here.  All artists should be aware that there are millions.. maybe billions of creative souls out there.  Art is not a competition, but rather a collective expression of the human race.  We all contribute to it in our own little way.

Be well, my friends!

Back home again! But only 'til Wednesday when I fly west to British Columbia to help that beleaguered province with the fires still raging there.  I'll be going out there without my crew, this time as a value-protection specialist.. or in layman's terms: tha boss-man protecting homes n' stuff.

My last assignment found me in charge (Incident Commander) of a 550 ha. fire north of Nipigon, Ontario.  It was a good experience, even for me, a veteran of 27 years.  In charge of over 50 persons, and dealing with the logistics of de-mobing the operation, my mind has been in overdrive for the past three weeks.

I managed to empty my reserve of new photographs lined up on, and finally just yesterday re-posted two older shots as I travelled home.  Thanks again everyone for understanding my lack of replies and general participation here at dA.  I replied when I could using my phone, but it's just not that easy to navigate the site using the stupid app.

A shout out to my new friend Marc DiPaolo, author of 'War, Politics, and Superheroes', who has purchased one of my images for use on the cover of his upcoming book.  This will be my fifth book cover.  Thanks for your interest Marc!

I'll be getting my gear recycled for my new deployment over the next few days and trying to catch up with some friends IRL, so I'm afraid to say you still won't be hearing from me too much for another 3-4 weeks. That should probably take me to the end of fire season!

I'm looking forward to being able to relax and enjoy dA the way I used to, showcasing artists and holding photo contests.  Another month! Until then, stay beautiful my artistic friends!

Here I go again... two days were so busy recycling my gear that I unfortunately didn't get much time for dA.  I'll be looking out for the odd bit of wi-fi while I'm gone for a few weeks.

Thanks again for all your comments and favs etc.  I wish i'd had time to respond to them all, but just know that they are cherished.  The wishes of good fortune and safety have all been duly noted and I must tell you that the safety of my men takes priority in my thoughts at all times while we are fighting fire.

Stay awesome, my artistic friends!

Man and Fire by wb-skinner
I'm back home for a couple days.  There have been over 300 new fires in northwestern Ontario in the 19 days I've been away.  My four-man initial-attack helicopter crew actioned 6 fires in the past 3 weeks and we're very tired.  When we are not camping wherever the chopper drops us, we get pulled in to remote forward attack bases for a hot meal and a shower and recycle our equipment to go again. Usually there is satellite internet and slow wi-fi around the office building of these camps. Never any cell service.

I managed to post a picture from my phone using st.ash every time I found wi-fi, and when I ran out I re-posted a few of my older shots. Thanks to everyone who commented or faved or featured, or even just had a look at those past few shots. It's very appreciated!

I have two days off now and then it's back to the bush. Hopefully I can have a few new shots ready to post, but I think my submissions will be very slow this month.  I'll try to catch up with viewing all the art stacked up in my message box too!

Be well my friends!
