The cold mist softens the daybreak sky with its towering caress. The ice is thickening on the frozen rocks of Gitche Gumee. The temperature has plummeted to -40C and the winds are bitter.. so bitter. There is still open water here at the end of Sibley Peninsula, where the vastness of the cold lake truly begins.. but not for long... The texture of the water is already turning to slush on its way to ice. The soft peachy glow in the sky is in direct contradiction to the harsh weather, like a weak attempt by the sun to penetrate winters grip on the land.
I remember struggling with numb hands and dead camera batteries on this shoot.. especially fidgeting with my tripod in order to get this composition right, with the lines meeting the corners of the photo, dividing it diagonally.
